Students in 7th grade had an exciting day in science class getting DNA out of strawberries. Students used a variety of household items, including soap, salt, water, rubbing alcohol, cheesecloth and wooden skewers to help them collect DNA from their strawberry samples. Below are how students explained what it was they did to get their cool DNA (as seen in the photos!):

“First we smashed strawberries then we mixed it with a soap, water, and salt mixture. We put 3 spoonfuls of that into the mashed strawberries and adding rubbing alcohol…we found it activating the element in the cup thus finding DNA” – Zaire C.

“1. I took the stem off, 2. Mashed it in a bag, 3. Mixed in some dish soap solution, 4. Filtered it to take out the chunks, 5. Added rubbing alcohol and mixed it, 6. Picked up the clumps of DNA that looked like slime.” – Joselyn M.
