Pathfinders are learning to put their math where the mouth is. Instead of simply saying that 3×4=12, students are learning to create visual models to prove that something is mathematically true. Visual math is a path to numerical math and Pathfinders are stretching their thinking as they look for ways to prove a statement using a model.

In addition to providing evidence, Pathfinders are creating a community of mathematicians. Sharing ideas and strategies – without giving away solutions – requires practice. Students are practicing ways to collaborate and have an effective conversation in math as they focus more on questions and less on answers.

The skills developed now will assist Pathfinders in math – as well as in their other subjects – throughout the year. Be sure to have them Prove It to you whenever you have a conversation with a Pathfinder!
