Last Monday we kicked off our 2018-2019 school year at Science Leadership Academy Middle School (SLAMS)! This year’s start was made unique by the school’s move to its new location at 36th and Market. The courtyard was filled with smiles and laughter as community members made new friends and reconnected to classmates missed over the summer.
In the fifth and sixth grade wing, students applied the core values of inquiry and collaboration while becoming familiar with their classmates. Ms.Grieco’s Humanities students learned names and one thing they did this summer they thought they could not do. In Ms.Hilary’s room, Humanities students used inquiry and collaboration to observe book covers and talk about the year of reading, writing and history ahead of them. In Science classes students in Mr.Scherer’s & Ms.Ko’s room played “10 questions” with each other. This exercise took students through the meaningful skills of listening and eye contact as they collaborated. During Spanish class students discussed what is in a name with Professora Lamk. The collaboration and thinking continued in Math with Ms.I, where students worked on solving math problems. Mrs. Carter asked her students what numbers would tell their story, such as address and age or their favorite number.
The seventh graders explored their entire new wing of classrooms throughout the day. The students met their new Math (Mr.Rioux), Humanities (Ms.Sara), Art (Mrs.Hall) and Science (Mrs.Milnes) teachers. The day was filled with learning new patterns in the building and welcoming new students to the grade.
It was a memorable day and we are looking forward to an incredible school year ahead. Remember to mark your calendar for Back to School Night on Thursday, September 27th, 5:30-6:30. Stay tuned for details in the advisory memo in the weeks to follow.
